Career Training Opportunities

Dear Partners,
As we look out through the end of the year, I want to get some career pathways opportunities on your radar for students. We would be happy to find a time to talk with you or anyone on your team in more depth about these options, or present to a class or group of students. Please let me know what the best approach would be for your team and your students!

Accelerated Career English: final cohorts for this funding cycle begin April 4 (evening) and April 14 (daytime), run until June 30
We've worked with 8 cohorts of Accelerated Career English in the last year and a half, and it has been such an exciting, positive program! We are able to work with students at high intermediate-advanced levels (even those testing "exit level" on NRS assessments) to continue improving their English skills, determine and advance on their career path, and enter employment, training or college. After the initial intensive course, students continue to receive tailored English language and advising support, including exam prep (eg TOEFL, college placement test, LSAT, MTEL), speaking/pronunciation and contextualized reading/writing classes, job placement, and prep for college pathways until they achieve their goals.

Some recent outcomes include: 5 alumni trained as medical interpreters; alumni certificates in medical billing/coding, clinical trial monitoring, Java developer, and yoga teacher; jobs in a variety of settings (schools, refugee resettlement, insurance, etc.); and alumni going on to college.

ACE is free to students and fully online. We can work with un- or under-employed language learners anywhere in Massachusetts who have work authorization. To learn more and apply: www.hcc.edu/ace

MassSTEP Nurse Aide for English Learners: next cohort begins in April
This is a daytime, full-time program that meets primarily in person at the Picknelly Center (206 Maple St) in Holyoke. Classes meet 8:30am-2pm, M-F. Students learn nurse aide skills in preparation for the state CNA exam, in addition to becoming certified as Home Health Aides. (They also earn CPR/Basic Life Support and get contextualized ESOL and advising/career readiness coaching.) Getting your CNA is a great first step to a career in healthcare! At HCC, students enrolled in Foundations of Health can earn 6 college credits for their CNA. CNA is also a prerequisite for applying for HCC's nursing program, a goal of many of our nurse aide students. Open to high-intermediate students with work authorization, who can pass a CORI/SORI. Advisors continue to work with students on job placement after the program ends.
For more information, a printable flyer, and to apply: here.

MassSTEP Culinary/Hospitality for English Learners: two cohorts running this summer, day and evening.
This program will be offered in a hybrid format again this summer, based out of the beautiful HCC-MGM Culinary Arts Institute on Race Street on the Holyoke canals. Students earn a variety of credentials that support their steps in the culinary/hospitality industry: ServSafe Food Handler and Manager, OSHA10, ServSafe Alcohol, and Guest Service Gold. They work on culinary fundamentals, methods and knife skills under the direction of HCC Culinary Arts faculty. They also work with an  ESOL teacher and advisor to set them up for success throughout and beyond the program! Advisors continue to work with students on job placement after the program ends. While this program typically serves intermediate-level students, we may have more flexibility to serve a variety of levels this summer -- stay tuned!
For more information, a printable flyer, and to apply: here.

Finally, I want to point you towards two important links to share with your students:
  • www.hcc.edu/job-ready lists our free workforce development programs (not necessarily tailored to ESOL students, but open to them!) Highlights include paraprofessional training through TRAIN, a new hotel training, and Community Health Worker (a credit-bearing FREE certificate program with "pre-training" support for students who are not yet at college level).
  • www.hcc.edu/esol lists all of our ESOL-specific options -- Ludlow, Springfield, West Springfield, Accelerated Career English, and MassSTEP programs
  • www.hcc.edu/aesl has information about HCC's Academic ESL program, for college-bound students
  • www.hcc.edu/tcc has information about Transitions to College, which supports students with a variety of college pathways including Academic ESL
Please let me know any questions, and how we can best support your students and staff. We look forward to meeting your students, and are grateful to be building this network of pathways in partnership with you.

Wishing you all a great spring,
Pesha
